Amanda Bynes rose to fame in the ‘90s and became one of the biggest teen stars of the 2000s.

After finding success on Nickelodeon and in hit movies, she stepped away from acting in 2010 at age 24.

Despite well-publicized personal struggles, Bynes has continued pursuing creative projects, including music, art, and fashion.

For more than a decade, Amanda Bynes was a genuine rising star. From sketch comedy to sitcoms to mainstream movies, she was one of the most recognizable young actors of the 2000s. Then she stepped away from acting.

Bynes’ comic timing and delivery on the Nickelodeon shows All That and The Amanda Show caught people’s attention, and before you know it she transitioned to the big screen with a string of successful movies, including Big Fat Liar (2002) and Hairspray (2007). At the time, the actress made no secret of her career aspirations.

“I’ve never been to the Oscars or the Emmys. So I just gotta keep doing a good job in movies, and hoping I will one day be nominated, and then I’ll get to go,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2007. She also joked, “But otherwise I like to sit home with my popcorn and my parents, and pick out things I like and don’t like about other people’s attire.”

But Bynes hasn’t appeared in a film — or on the small screen, for that matter — since the hit 2010 rom-com Easy A. That year, at age 24, she announced her retirement from acting, briefly reversed that decision, and ultimately stepped away from Hollywood.

After putting acting aside, Bynes pursued her fashion ambitions while navigating personal hardships. Amid legal issues and struggles with substance abuse and mental health, she was placed under a conservatorship that lasted from 2013 to 2022. In recent years, she has pursued projects in fashion, art, and music while maintaining a social media presence and largely staying out of the Hollywood spotlight.

Here’s everything to know about Amanda Bynes and where she is today.

Bynes first gained prominence as a cast member on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That, alongside fellow rising stars Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, and Nick Cannon. Remember “Ask Ashley”? Yeah, that was her.

The adolescent star’s comedic chops earned her a spinoff, The Amanda Show. In addition to hosting duties, she played a number of outlandish characters, including her own number-one fan, Penelope Taynt, as well as the title character on the Dawson’s Creek parody Moody’s Point.

The show regularly featured budding stars Drake Bell and Josh Peck, along with Taran Killam, who appeared in the Moody’s Point sketches, and guest stars like Ashley Tisdale. By 2004, Bynes had won six Kids’ Choice Awards — including four consecutive wins for Favorite Female TV Star — and earned a spot on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2003.

Bynes ascended to big-screen fame after starring opposite Frankie Muniz in Big Fat Liar, in which the two contended with a villainous Paul Giamatti. From there, she took center stage in the fish-out-of-water comedy What a Girl Wants (2003).

As her four-year stint on the sitcom What I Like About You came to an end, Bynes brought Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to the high school soccer pitch in She’s the Man (2006), then helped reinvent a Baltimore classic in the star-studded musical adaptation of Hairspray. Later that year, she delivered a college spin on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Sydney White (2007).

Everything was going well for the young actress, who was often praised for avoiding the pitfalls of early stardom. “I’m very lucky,” the actress told Showbiz Tonight in 2007. “I have a great family and I just have my eye on the prize, which for me is a long career… I don’t want to blow what I’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

But in June 10, ahead of the release of Easy A — in which she played a memorable, uncharacteristically villainous role opposite Emma Stone — Bynes announced her retirement from acting at age 24, only to reverse the decision a month later. Nevertheless, Easy A would become her final screen appearances, and Bynes subsequently faced a series of personal challenges.

Despite the eventual success of Easy A — which came in at No. 14 on EW’s list of the best high school movies — Bynes later revealed that an early screening of the film prompted her sudden decision to quit acting.

“I literally couldn’t stand my appearance in that movie and I didn’t like my performance. I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it,” she told Paper in 2018, explaining that her state of mind at the time also played a role. “I was high on marijuana when I saw that but for some reason it really started to affect me. I don’t know if it was a drug-induced psychosis or what, but it affected my brain in a different way than it affects other people. It absolutely changed my perception of things.”

Following the screening, Bynes announced her retirement on Twitter, a decision she told Paper was “stupid.”

Though she had a relatively clean-cut public reputation, not to mention an endearing relationship with her fans, Bynes had begun struggling behind the scenes. As she discussed in detail with Paper, she began abusing Adderall in an attempt to stay thin, and her use of the drug affected her work on later acting projects. She recalled being “scatterbrained” while filming the 2010 comedy Hall Pass, from which she ultimately withdrew.

Her personal struggles spilled into public view in 2012, when she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, resulting in a widely circulated mugshot featuring her pink-tinted hair.

Over the next several years, Bynes faced additional legal issues and received psychiatric treatment. A string of legal troubles — including drug-related charges in New York, multiple alleged hit-and-runs, and other driving-related incidents — was followed by a particularly concerning episode in the summer of 2013.

After reportedly starting a small fire in the driveway of a stranger’s home, Bynes was placed on an involuntary 72-hour psychiatric hold in July 2013. Her hospitalization was subsequently extended, and the actress’ mother was granted a temporary conservatorship over her in August.

In the months and years that followed, as Bynes continued to struggle with her mental health, her social media posts attracted considerable attention, including a 2014 post from her verified Twitter account announcing a bipolar disorder diagnosis. However, a subsequent post suggested that a friend had written the earlier messages. As she worked to get her life back on track, Bynes began studying at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 2014, eventually earning an associate’s degree in merchandise product development.

In 2018, the former child star told Paper she had been sober for almost four years, crediting her parents with helping her turn her life around. Her conservatorship was officially terminated in March 2022.

“I would like to thank my fans for their love and well wishes during this time. I would also like to thank my lawyer and my parents for their support over the last nine years,” Bynes told PEOPLE in 2022. “In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter.”

Since the conservatorship ended, Bynes has continued to experience personal challenges, including a 72-hour psychiatric hold in March 2023. Around the same time, she withdrew from a scheduled All That panel at 90s Con.

But Bynes has continued working on various artistic and career endeavors. In April 2022, she released two singles with her then-fiancé, Paul Michael: “Diamonds” and “Fairfax.” In late 2023, she launched a podcast, Amanda Bynes & Paul Sieminski: The Podcast. She called it quits after one episode, deciding instead to pursue a career as a manicurist.

“The 1st episode of my podcast did really well. I was actually surprised and of course was going to keep going after friends encouraged me to,” she wrote on Instagram. “After thinking about it, though, I would rather get my manicurist license and have a consistent job. I’m going to follow that path instead.”

Bynes’ fashion pursuits paid off in 2024 when she collaborated with fashion designer Austin Babbitt on a clothing collection featuring her original artwork. Following an official announcement that October, she and Babbitt hosted a pop-up art show in West Hollywood on Dec. 21, marking her first major public event in over a decade.

Bynes displayed various pieces — with titles including “Stars,” “Grey,” “Night,” and “Lavender Dreams” — while chatting with fans, signing autographs, and posing for photos.

In March 2025, former Amanda Show costar Josh Peck mentioned on his Good Guys podcast that he still crosses paths with Bynes from time to time.

“I see her, like, every two to three years, we’ll run into each other, and she’s just the greatest,” Peck said. “She was great then, she remains great and such a good person. Obviously [she] has had some public struggles, but I just think she’s got one of the great hearts and great skills, great talents of anyone there is.”

A month later, Bynes found another way to connect with her supporters when she joined OnlyFans, though she assured everyone, “I won’t be posting any sleazy content.”

Bynes continues to use her social platforms to keep fans on her life, personal challenges, and creative pursuits. She has also spoken candidly about her decision to go on Ozempic, which she said she was taking in order to “look better in paparazzi pictures.”

Bynes released “Girlfriend” in April 2026, her first track in four years. In a statement shared with E! News, Bynes’ label, Create Music Group, described the song is a “catchy, high-replay record with a smooth West Coast bounce,” built around a strong hook and flirtatious energy.

“My inspiration was a lot of EDM, as well as rap,” Bynes told PEOPLE. The track features Zabba and Fenix Flexin, while Bynes sings about wanting to be someone’s girlfriend. The cover art depicts a wintry scene, with a pale pink sky and snow-covered trees. “Girlfriend” is currently available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.

In addition to music, Bynes remains invested in fashion. She has been designing and promoting custom handbags through her own fashion label, new york $peed.
