White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made an eerily prescient joke just moments before gunfire exchanged at the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday.
"It will be funny. It will be entertaining. There will be some shots fired tonight in the room," Leavitt told Fox News on the red carpet before heading into the event, which was disrupted shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET when gunfire erupted and President Donald J. Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were all rushed out of the Washington Hilton ballroom.
"Everyone should tune in, it's gonna be really great. I'm looking forward to hearing it," Leavitt concluded in that Fox News interview, which has since gone viral on social media.

After being evacuated, Trump shared a video on his Truth Social account of the suspect storming the White House Correspondents' Dinner, as well as a photo of the apprehended suspect on the ground. At a press conference, the president called the suspect "a sick person, a very sick person," adding that the man "charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service."
Trump posted that he wanted to "LET THE SHOW GO ON" but ultimately "Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately."
Many journalists were at the annual event (the first Trump chose to attend during either of his terms as president), as well as former former *Curb Your Enthusiasm* star Cheryl Hines, who is married to Trump cabinet member Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

"Okay, so I just got back from the White House Correspondents' Dinner. That was a crazy, um, moment in time."," Hines said in an Instagram story she posted late Saturday evening. "We were there and we heard shots and, um, everybody got under the tables. Nobody knew what was going on, and then, um, you know, Bobby's security detail surrounded us and took us.... I mean, really, like, had to lift me over chairs, because I'm in heels and and a gown, and, um, and they took us through all of the back ways, and we, uh, got in the car, and left. So, anyway, I'm just giving you a little update."
