The Queen and the Princess of Wales, both well versed in the art of soft diplomacy, showed just how powerful a joint effort can be as they greeted the Sultan of Oman at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

With the Queen in vibrant poppy red and the Princess in a deep green, they represented the two dominant colours in the Omani flag: a classic way to pay homage to a visiting royal on an official state visit.

Catherine wore a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen coat that she’s owned since at least 2022, and last wore in public on St Patrick’s Day in 2025. Underneath, she wore a black turtleneck with a frilled collar. She completed her look with a Juliette Botterill hat, coordinating suede courts and a Chanel bag – a classic black flap with gold hardware that’s been a part of her collection since 2023.

The pièce de résistance was her Prince of Wales feathers diamond and emerald brooch – a piece which has been worn by others who have held the title of Princess of Wales since 1863. Originally it was given to Princess Alexandra of Denmark from the “Ladies of North Wales” when she married the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII). It does more than coordinate; it exhibits her status as the wife of the next in line to the throne.

Queen Camilla’s coat and matching dress were made, meanwhile, from a wool crepe by Fiona Clare, her go-to couturier, and teamed with a Philip Treacy hat.

She went all-out with the jewellery too, completing her look with a ruby and diamond flower brooch, one of a pair known as the Queen Mother’s Cartier floral clip brooches. This set, which dates back to the 1940s, was on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Cartier exhibition last year.

Both Camilla and Catherine’s ensembles for this formal engagement could be likened to uniforms for the jobs they are performing. Style is a factor, naturally, but everything they choose to wear becomes powerfully symbolic on a State Visit such as this.

Later this evening, the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales will host a formal state banquet in honour of the Sultan of Oman at Windsor Castle. We can expect the eveningwear to be dazzling – and we’ll have all the details here.
