Samira Wiley is withdrawing from Broadway's upcoming production of Proof.
The Orange Is the New Black and Handmaid's Tale actress was previously announced to play Claire in the production starring Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle, and Jin Ha. Now, a spokesperson for the show has announced that Wiley has the production's "complete support and well wishes" as she steps aside to deal with "a treatable medical condition that calls for her full attention."
No further details about Wiley's condition were provided. Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives of the actress for further comment.
In Wiley's absence, the role of Claire will be filled by Broadway alum and Tony-winning actress Kara Young. Just last year, Young made history as the first Black performer to win two consecutive Tony Awards, picking up her second statuette for Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Purpose after scoring her first in 2024 with Ossie Davis' Purlie Victorious. Young was most recently seen Off Broadway in Rajiv Joseph's Gruesome Playground Injuries and is next set to star in the film adaptation of Aleshea Harris' Is God Is, in addition to her role in Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters.

Proof hails from Pulitzer prize winner David Auburn and is helmed by Tony-winning Hamilton director Thomas Kail and set to play a 16-week engagement. Previews begin at the Booth Theatre on March 31, with opening night set for April 16.

Proof follows the story of Catherine (Edebiri), a brilliant but restless daughter of renowned mathematics professor Robert (Cheadle) who is already grappling with his death when a notebook containing a revelatory proof is discovered. She is then thrust into turmoil as debate erupts over its true authorship, forcing her to confront the power of legacy and the cost of proving herself.

The play had its world premiere Off Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2000 and quickly became a sold-out smash, transferring to Broadway where it received six Tony Award nominations and won three, including Best Play. Original stars Mary-Louise Parker and Larry Bryggman both earned Tony nods for their performances, and that same year, Auburn's play earned the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Proof has since been widely produced across the country and internationally, also earning a 2005 feature film adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
