June “Mama June” Shannon is opening up about a recent health scare she feared might be cancer, nearly two years after losing her daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell to the disease.
During the Tuesday, Mar. 3 episode of Page Six’sVirtual Reali-Tea podcast, the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star, 46, revealed that she underwent a hysterectomy last year—a surgical procedure to remove the uterus.
“I had a total hysterectomy unexpectedly last year—last April. It was not expected,” Shannon said. “It was a scare for me because I did have some fibroid cysts that went to separated cysts, and we had a little scare.”
“Me, in my mind, going what Anna went through, I was worried it was going to be ovarian cancer. I even told the [other] kids that. I was in my head for a long time," she continued.

Cardwell died in December 2023 at the age of 29 after being diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma in January of that year. She left behind two daughters, Kaitlyn, 13, and Kylee, 10.
In addition to her late daughter, Shannon is also mom to Jessica "Chubbs" Shannon, 29, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird, 26, and Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, 20.
Shannon, who also confirmed she's going through menopause, added that she’s “still dealing with medical issues,” but clarified that her health issues are “totally separate” and unrelated to the end of her menstrual periods.
“Some days are a struggle for me, but it’s nothing like [cancer],” she explained. “I tell people, ‘We know it’s not ever gonna kill me, but it could immobilize me.'”
Shannon first rose to fame after appearing on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras in 2011 with Thompson, who was six at the time. The family then landed their own TLC spin-off, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, in 2012.
