The following post contains some light spoilers for "Supergirl" (in theaters June 26) so beware if you want to go in totally cold.
"Supergirl" is giving the new DC movie universe a bolt of youthful energy.
Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El with two-fisted punk-rock flair in director Craig Gillespie's superhero film (in theaters now). Introduced as the party-hearty cousin of Clark Kent (David Corenswet) in last summer's "Superman," Kara is off on a space adventure with her beloved superdog Krypto and a pair of new allies, young girl Ruthye (Eve Ridley) and bounty hunter Lobo (Jason Momoa), that doubles as a revenge movie.
Superhero movies always appeal to youngsters, but "Supergirl" has some aspects that might concern parents. Here's what they :
What is 'Supergirl' about?
After debuting in "Superman," Milly Alcock reprises her role as the Man of Steel's party-girl cousin in the DC superhero movie "Supergirl."
Celebrating her 23rd birthday, Kara is on a cosmic bar crawl and coping with a tragic childhood in adult drinks. One night she meets Ruthye, whose parents were killed by the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). Kara's reluctant to help in Ruthye's quest for justice, until Krem poisons Krypto and he escapes with his baddie Brigands. Kara and Ruthye team up to find the antidote, save the super-pup and foil the Brigands' intergalactic human-trafficking scheme.
How long is 'Supergirl'?
The runtime of the newest DC adventure clocks in at 108 minutes – or an hour and 48 – which is actually a pretty good length for a studio superhero movie. The main plot moves along at a good pace, though assorted flashbacks to Kara's Kryptonian origins wind up slowing down the momentum.

What is the age rating of 'Supergirl'?
Jason Momoa makes his debut as gonzo space biker Lobo in "Supergirl."
"Supergirl" is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association "for sequences of strong violence, action, language, and smoking." The latter comes courtesy of the gonzo Lobo, and he and Kara are mainly responsible for the cursing, usually of the four-letter S-word variety. But there's a lot of violence in the action sequences, from bar brawls to space-bus pirate attacks, and it's not cartoonish either. Often, Kara and other young women are in peril, and quite a few people die or are viciously murdered.
Is 'Supergirl' appropriate for young children?
Not really – it's probably best for teens and tweens who can handle violence and heady topics. The movie features flashbacks to Kara's traumatic childhood first watching her planet explode and then witnessing her people, including her mom (Emily Beecham), die from Kryptonite poisoning before her dad (David Krumholtz) sends her to Earth. So that's pretty rough, and then you add in Ruthye's family being murdered in front of her and the various bad things that Krem gets up to? That's a lot for a little kid. Not to mention that an ailing Krypto is hard to watch. (Even though it's a digital creation, he's seriously adorable.)
The main characters also make hard moral decisions, though Kara is a young woman who figures out the person and the hero she needs to be when she heeds her mom's wishes: "You don't need to be nice, but you need to be good." Supergirl may not be as kind as her cousin, youngsters will recognize her goodness and big heart, even under a rough-and-tumble exterior.
Does 'Supergirl' have a post-credits scene?
Nope! Unlike "Superman" and a lot of other superhero movies, "Supergirl" doesn't have a post-credits scene. So if the kids want to take off when the credits roll, you're not going to miss anything.
Where can I watch 'Supergirl'?
The DC movie is in theaters nationwide June 26. Those who want to stream "Supergirl" at home will have to wait some time, depending on how it does at the box office. If it follows a similar path to "Superman," "Supergirl" will likely premiere on video-on-demand platforms by early August and hit HBO Max in September.
