Eric Dane’s ex, Rebecca Gayheart, recalls how “s--- went crazy’ in their relationship before she filed for divorce in February 2018
“Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love,” she explained in a new essay

Rebecca Gayheart is opening up about her and Eric Dane’s “complicated” relationship.
In a new essay for The Cut published on Monday, Dec. 29, the actress and estranged wife of the Grey’s Anatomy alum shared insight into how their relationship has evolved over the years.
“Eric and I have known each other for a million years now,” Gayheart, 54, wrote. “I care about him deeply. We had a really lovely marriage for a long time — we were married for 15 years — we created two beautiful girls.”
The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress married the Euphoria star, 53, in 2004, less than a year after their first date. They welcomed their first daughter, Billie Beatrice, in 2010, and a second daughter, Georgia Geraldine, in 2011.

Gayheart then filed for divorce in February 2018 before requesting to dismiss the petition in March 2025.
“Lots of s--- went crazy in our relationship, and it wasn’t good,” Gayheart recalled of the months leading up to their split. “We separated, but we never got a divorce; we were about to and then we didn’t. We haven’t lived in the same home for eight years; he’s dated other people, I’ve dated someone."
"It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people," she continued. "Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.”
Gayheart also said that she has remained by Dane’s side as their family continues to navigate the physical and emotional struggles that have come with his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis earlier this year.
“Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him,” she explained. “That I’m going to do my best to do right by him. And I know he would do the same for me. So whatever I can do or however I can show up to make this journey better for him or easier for him, I want to do that. And I want to model that for my girls: That’s what you do. That’s the right thing to do.”
Aside from the “24/7 nurses” and constant battles with the healthcare system, Gayheart also noted that there were a few beautiful things that came from Dane’s diagnosis.
“Spending all this time together, it’s all been really positive, and I think it’s nice for the kids to see maybe a softer side of us,” she wrote. “It’s not that they have the hopes of us being together — kids always dream of their parents getting back together, and I think now ours don’t because they understand the reality of the situation. And hopefully, what they see instead are two adults who are trying to be mature and focus on what’s important.”
