During the event, Moynihan revealed the Disney movie he watched "every day" in college
For years, Bobby Moynihan has been a familiar and funny voice in animation, bringing energy to a range of beloved characters, and now he’s stepping into royal territory as King George in the upcoming Disney Pixar film Hoppers.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the animated movie, the 49-year-old actor and comedian reveals which Disney film he used to be obsessed with, telling PEOPLE that long before he was voicing animated heroes, he was a devoted fan with a well-worn VHS tape.
“I have a very distinct memory, but it was a little late in life. The Lion King in college,” Moynihan tells PEOPLE exclusively at the Feb. 23 event. “I woke up every day for a year in college and watched The Lion King. I was a little too old. I probably should have been going to class.”
The Saturday Night Live alum graduated from the University of Connecticut's School of Fine Arts in 1999, five years after the beloved Disney movie came out.

"It was a lot of Lion King," he admits. "I'll still do it to this day. It's the best, the best."
Moynihan's connection to The Lion King unexpectedly runs deep. The sweeping music, emotional storytelling and timeless themes of growth and responsibility clearly left a mark on him. “It's got a beautiful message,” he emphasizes.

That admiration has since extended to the Broadway stage version, as well, specifically regarding the lovable warthog, Pumbaa.
“I would kill to do that [Broadway show],” he tells PEOPLE. “I would play Pumbaa in that show in a second.”

Over time, Moynihan has built a steady and successful voice acting career, lending his distinctive comedic style to animated series and films, such as The Secret Life of Pets, We Bare Bears and Nature Cat, to name a few.
As Moynihan prepares to take on King George in Hoppers, it’s clear the college kid who couldn’t stop watching The Lion King never really grew out of that passion for storytelling and animation — he simply turned it into a career.
Hoppers premieres in theaters on March 6 and stars John Hamm, Dave Franco, and Piper Curda. The film centers on a young woman named Mabel who uses groundbreaking technology to transfer her consciousness into a robotic beaver, allowing her to interact directly with the animal world.
